Max braced himself for the impending implosion. The moment when his teammate would disintegrate. Lizzy swayed. Her bloodless face made her look ghostly in the harsh camera lights.

“To whoever’s watching. Don’t show my parents this video. Tell my daddy and mom that I love them and that I died a peaceful death.”

“Baby. No.” Johnny shook with emotion.

“And tell Jay Jay he’s always been the ones. This song is for him. The one I’ve chosen for him.”

“Who is Jay Jay?” Max asked.

“Me,” Johnny growled through gritted teeth.

A voice so pure hummed through the screen as Lizzy began to sing a familiar tune. A lonely one. Avril Lavigne, “I’m with you.”

Max watched his buddy. Confusion marred Johnny’s face for a split second, instantly replaced by soul-wrenching torment. Max turned back to the screen. The Scythian walked over to the table and picked up a sword.

Max gave the signal and operatives converged. He shut himself off from Johnny’s hoarse shouts as men dragged him out the door into the night air.

Johnny could not see her die; Max would never allow it. As team leader, he had no choice but to watch, and owed it to Lizzy to seek revenge and to find justice for her brave little soul. Her death would weigh heavily on his wife—who loved her friend. It would weigh on Max, causing nightmares for years to come. Lizzy was a friend, and he cared for her like a big brother.

He blocked out the impending violence and focused on the subtle nuances he’d picked up in the earlier footage. Watching her body language and listening closely in her last few seconds.

Donnie turned away, unable to watch.

The brutality hit like a tidal wave—interrupting her mid-song. Max stood frozen as the barbarous drama played out and Lizzy’s screams filled the air. Not even his analytical brain could block out the savagery rolling across the screen.

“Fuck me.” Someone whispered from behind.
